Energy transition

Developing a climate-friendly and sustainable energy supply for tomorrow is the challenge faced today. Gas as a climate-friendly energy source can achieve more than short-term climate protection targets. Indeed, as a renewable or decarbonised gas produced in power-to-gas plants, for example, it is set to play a central role in the climate-neutral energy system of the future. The gas infrastructure provides an opportunity to transport very large quantities of renewable energy and to store them in the long term. The integration of renewable and decarbonised gases into the energy system can make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions in all consumption sectors quickly and cost-effectively.

en Das Prinzip Sektorkopplung verfolgt einen integrativen Ansatz, der für das Gelingen der Energiewende das energiewirtschaftliche Gesamtsystem betrachtet. Die Verknüpfung der Sektoren Strom- und Wärmeversorgung, Mobilität und industrielle Prozesse sowie deren Infrastrukturen sind der Schlüssel für eine erfolgreiche Energiewende.

#Power to gas

Die Power-to-Gas-Technologie ermöglicht es, Wasser durch Elektrolyse in Wasserstoff bzw. Methan umzuwandeln und in bestehende Gasinfrastrukturen zu speichern und zu transportieren. So kann überschüssiger Erneuerbarer Strom, der etwa an besonders windigen Tagen produziert wird, auch längerfristig gespeichert werden. 

#Green gas

Biogas und -methan, Grüner Wasserstoff und Synthetisches Methan werden als Grüne Gase bezeichnet und gelten als unverzichtbar für den Erfolg der Energiewende. Ihre Herstellung basiert auf innovativen Technologien, die Erneuerbare Energien – wie Wind, Sonne oder Biomasse – nutzen.

The German transmission system operators accept their responsibility: Consistently pursuing a holistic and smart approach to sector coupling, i.e. the integration of gas, electricity, heat and mobility structures as well as industry, gives us the opportunity to meet the national and binding European climate protection targets for 2030.
It’s high time we set the course. In future, the well-developed gas infrastructure can serve as a transportation and storage system for renewable gas produced by power-to-gas plants, thus replacing carbon-intensive energy sources in the long term.
